ABC's "V" will work for now

What happens when you combine bland writing and bland acting sprinkled with enough plot holes to easily mistake something with Swiss cheese and add in a ton of special effects? You get ABC's "V" - an alien invasion drama reimagined from an 80s series of the same name.

The thing is, even with some serious plot holes like not asking where the nearly 30 huge alien spaceships are from, I still found the pilot episode of "V" intriguing. Maybe it's because I'm of the age where I never saw the original series so I'm not comparing it to anything or I just feel that it's prime time for an alien drama. Whatever the case is, "V" actually has a chance of drawing in viewers. Especially after the big reveal towards the end of the first episode that the visitors or V's, have infiltrated human society for many years before their impressive and showy arrival and the underlying fact that the V's are in fact reptilian in nature with a covering of human skin to blend in to our society. Toss in the element of some V's being traitors to their own cause and you have all of the elements you could want; betrayal, distrust and mystery as well as a less-than-convincing Elizabeth Mitchell (Juliet from "Lost") as the lead character and FBI agent who seems destined to lead the resistance.

So far, the series loosely parallels the current state of affairs in our own country with the V's promising to heal numerous ailments for free and bring world peace at a time when the economy is in ruins. They use their attractive looks to draw in human ambassadors to further their yet-to-be-revealed agenda. An underground resistance is being put together but it seems that the V's plans for humanity is rather nefarious after an alien spycraft killed nearly everyone at a resistance meeting which makes the resistance that much more important.

"V" has legs as a limited-run series because the inevitable end of the series is an epic battle of the alien resistance against the V's and the pacing of the first episode seems to indicate that ABC knows it's better off making "V" a 4 episode or half-season series and I applaud them for taking a chance on a series like this one.

Loved the original "V." A

Loved the original "V." A scene where one of the visitors bit or ate a rodent is forever stuck in my mind.
