My daughter, husband and father-in-law took a ride on an elephant at the Renaissance Festival two weeks ago. Click Read more to see my first stab at a slideshow.

Please visit www.elephants.com and see how elephants should be treated. Giving rides and being forced to perform isnt natural.
Teach your daughter to respect elephants and animals. The lives most live in captivity is sad. These are endangered animals. This is not how God intended for them to be treated.

I've heard that elephants are very social critters, and that when one of their own dies, they mourn a great deal. It's touching. Perhaps elephants are also smart enough to understand humans a bit. Maybe serving humans by giving rides is not so bad if the elephant understands some of our social aspects. Sometimes that includes seeing one's little girl on an elephant with Daddy and Grandpa. Maybe the elephant thinks, "what a cute kid!" My pet cat is by no means an otherwise wild elephant that is now serving humans, but I think she feels some joy being around humans. I have to think that whoever takes care of that ride-giving elephant probably speaks nicely to it, touches it, and feels some respect, regardless of how unnatural the elephant's life may appear. Nice elephant. Thanks for the ride.
