Wall-E's no Pand-A
Submitted by Melissa Gilman on July 28, 2008 - 2:48pm.We brought our daughter to see "Wall-E" last night. We debated going to see "Space Chimps" but the three adults in attendance opted for "Wall-E." My toddler/preschooler (proddler?) was less excited about the robots than she was by the animals in "Kung Fu Panda," which was her first big screen movie.
Still, she was entertained by the popcorn, soda and sour candy we let her eat, as well as the reaction she garnered by repeating the words, "I have to go poop." We learned this phrase was actually code for "I'm bored. Let's play in the arcade."
I liked the movie and thought it was really pretty and touching. Humans destroy the earth and become overweight, thoughtless drones sitting in floating La-Z Boys. But a few special robots remind the humans of the potential they, and their earthly home, possess. I'd give it 3 or 4 stars.

I drink your milkshake!
Submitted by LoriC on April 28, 2008 - 12:50pm.I finally got to see "There Will Be Blood" this weekend. Best movie I've seen in a long, long, long, long time.
It's the kind of movie that doesn't get made much anymore - great acting, original storyline, fantastic cinematography, well-placed but not overdone musical score, etc.
Daniel Day-Lewis tops even himself in this one. A must-see, an instant classic.
Oh, and I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE! (My husband got really tired of hearing me repeat this phrase dramatically over the weekend).

'No Country for Old Men': What's up with that ending?
Submitted by LoriC on March 3, 2008 - 11:49am.I must be getting old.
I saw "No Country for Old Men" this weekend, and while I thought the acting and directing was terrific, I just couldn't get past the blood and guts.
And what was up with that ending?
I get what they're trying to say. I just didn't like how certain things weren't really resolved. I won't say much more for fear of spoiling it for those who haven't seen it.
For those who have seen the movie - what did you think? Was it worthy of the "best picture" Oscar?

Three hours of kid-free bliss
Submitted by Melissa Gilman on February 18, 2008 - 4:57pm.This is on par with winning a Pulitzer - I went to a movie by myself Saturday night. I arrived 45 minutes early, chowed a box of popcorn and watched the video game promos run over and over again. It was awesome. My daughter was cutting her two-year molars during the day and refused to take a nap. I just about lost my mind. As soon as my husband got home from work I took off for the Chaska Rex and bought a ticket for "Jumper." The movie got out at 8:30 and I did what any cool suburban mom does when the kid is at home with dad - I went shopping at Target! Really, it doesn't take much to make me happy.

Spoil sport
Submitted by Melissa Gilman on January 26, 2008 - 10:22pm.I'm sick of getting excited about new movies and then never seeing them. So I've started reading spoiler Web sites that spell out scene by scene everything that happens in a movie. At least I know what happens in "Juno." I've got a two-year deal with satellite, no HBO or good movie channels, no NetFlix and no option to rent movies the old-fashioned way because, well, I'm paying for cable. It's a viscious cycle that involves a lot of bad TV. (Is it wrong to want to guest star on Reno 911?)

"The Next Karate Kid" goes with lousy fortune
Submitted by Mathias Baden on July 20, 2007 - 4:41pm.Last night was bad movie night at Mathias' house. As I disgustedly took "Firewall" out of my Xbox DVD player, my darling wife told me it was time for an evening snack, which usually means I need to get up and serve her.
The next bad movie of the night would be "The Next Karate Kid," so I thought a leftover fortune cookie would do the trick. We split it.
My wife did not read the fortune aloud. When I forced her to read it, I learned why she had not read it aloud in the first place.
"Everything I do, I do to make my heart sing" was the fortune.
