Wow, how inspirational. It's great to see a list of strong, talented women. In a day when Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, and Lindsey Lohan give us women a rep for being brainless sluts. Sometimes when I feel powerless, I listen to Janis Joplin, Ani Difranco, Liz Phair (old school Liz that is), Patty Griffin, Madonna, Amy Winehouse, Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, Cat Power, Lacey Mosely from Flyleaf, Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Kim Gordon from sonic youth, Kim Deal from the Pixies, Shirley Manson, Pat Benatar, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday, Aretha Franklin, . . . the list goes on and on.

The greatest reunion show i ever saw was the Eagles Hell Freezes Over Tour in the mid-nineties. Was that the beginning of the bury-the-hatchet-for-cash trend?

It's been a few yesars, but i remember it being a good show, even if it was a blatant feathering of the band's retirement fund.

Tom Waits is like good wine when it comes to songwriting, and his gravelly voice only gets rougher with age. Neil Young may look older, but he still divinely punishes his guitars when playing with Crazy Horse and can hit the soft high notes when performing acoustic.

And as a lifetime KISS fan, it pains me to say this, but there's a certain kind of show that starts to look pretty silly nearly 40 years after it began, and it involves thick makeup, 7-inch heels and Spandex costumes.

There's a rumor out that U2 will be releasing an album in 2008 with Brian Eno and Danial Lanois producing. I think U2 is a great example of a band that's been around for a long time, but keeps changing it up and giving us reasons to listen.
Also I love the clips from "Young@Heart". Especially the old man singing Cold Plays "Fix You", it's sadly beautiful.

I've got another rock chick to add to the list of the new women of rock.
I just heard the song "Last Day of Magic" by The Kills. That song gets stuck in my head a lot. The female lead singer, Alison "VV" Mosshart, rocks.

Ani Difranco is right up

Ani Difranco is right up there with a lot of the great names already mentioned. She's a triple threat: she's a great songwriter, singer and probably one of the most underrated guitar players out there. She attacks her instrument like she's playing slap bass. Check out this visceral calling out of an ex (wait for it - wait for it - the ROCK will come): Napoleon live

Minneapolis produced some of the finest Riot Grrls around, before that goofy term even existed, with Babes in Toyland (Hole owes a great debt to this band, and Courtney Love was even a member for a brief period of time): Bruise Violet

And when Patty Griffin's in the right mood, she can rock out with the best of them (again, wait for it - the rock is top-shelf psychoblues when it hits you in the face, but you gotta build to it): Flaming Red

Lately, I'm into Feist, which is more kind of quirk rock, but just great stuff.

I agree with you that Pat Benetar really rocked it. Her background in opera fueled her wide vocal range. I loved "Treat Me Right" & "You Better Run". Talk about girl power!

Ann & Nancy Wilson of Heart have to be mentioned as well. "Magic Man" & "Baracuda" will always be favorites of mine.
