It's official. The Writers Guild of America has settled their strike and is officially back to work today.
That is good news for couch potatoes everywhere but it won't mean immediate relief from the deluge of so-called reality fare that currently makes up the bulk of the primetime television schedule.
As always in the darkest of times, there is some light.
Tuesday night at 9 PM marked the strike-truncated return of last year's nearly cancelled CBS drama Jericho. The scheme used to save the drama from the network henchmen was clever as rabid fans sent peanuts to CBS executives implying that they were nuts to cancel the show. Well, their nuts campaign worked and the first episode back from a nearly 9 month hiatus stirred up the mysteries that were a central point of the show's first season.
The small rural Kansas town had been involved in a post-nuclear attack war with a neighboring town and the former United States is now divided complete with a now-united west that is gaining power under what is surely a corrupt leader in the new capitol city of, get this, Cheyenne, Wyoming and threatening to overtake the eastern half of the former U.S.A. complete with their ultra-creepy national flag that materialized much too fast in my opinion.
Underlying themes of military corruption as well as their cover-ups of the truth behind the nuclear attacks which caused a retaliatory nuclear war in Iran and North Korea.
Sure, it's just a T.V. show and I wish Major Dad Gerald McRaney wouldn't have been one of the battle victims from last season but if you like a good mystery, government and military conspiracies and double-crossing characters in the vein of Lost then this show is for you.
