During the summer months television gets downright dirty. No, I'm not talking about lurid scenes involving scantily clad individuals or grainy footage coming from the "Big Brother" house on CBS. I'm talking about actual dirt -- the kind you have to lather up to get rid of.
The reason for my dirty thoughts are the dirty promos airing during the few programs I've tuned in lately. A rainy Monday night meant catching a new episode of Discovery Channel's "Dirty Jobs" where host Mike Rowe tackled such unenviable tasks as cleaning the interior of a large wind turbine in Oklahoma, scrubbing cave walls and removing trash from sinkholes and aiding in the production of a newspaper which, ironically, featured a front page story about the dirty television host.
Yet more dirt hits the airwaves on Tuesdays. This week marks the debut of the third season of the always interesting documentary-style show "30 Days". The first episode focuses on host Morgan Spurlock (from some long-gone MTV game show) entering the West Virginia coal mines to live as a coal miner for, get this, 30 days.
"30 Days" always tends to turn out a run of thought provoking episodes which essnetially feature a fish out of water situation. For example, an episode last year featured a border patrolling minuteman living with a group of illegal Mexican immigrants in Los Angeles. Sure, plenty of the heartstring tugging moments come from some careful editing but the program always manages to show at least one clip of the fish out of water sympathizing with the situation he or she was placed in while coming away with the memories of an experience they otherwise wouldn't have had.
If only more television was this thought provoking. Why stop at television, though, how about trying this in real life?
Morgan Spurlock did the documentary "Super Size Me". He ate three McDonald's meals a day every day for 30 days and he had to take the "super-size" option whenever it was offered. I haven't seen the movie though - is is any good?
"Supersize Me" was a great documentary because it took the concept of indulging in fast food to the next level and showed exactly why too much of anything is no good. Spurlock's work takes a balanced approach to the storytelling and he always intersperses some form of expert testimony in the finished product.

My life changed for about a week after I watched "Supersize Me." But I'm still no stranger to the Golden Arches. Anyway, my husband was crazy about "Deadliest Catch" and it hooked me eventually. Now we both like "Dirty Jobs." I especially like that host Mike Rowe is celebrating the work people do, not ridiculing it.
I often leave the detective work up to the readers here but you mentioned someoned named "Brian Spurlock" who is a scientologist in one persona and a photographer in another and possibly a host of others.
As for the greatness that is the documentary "Supersize Me", I figured the earlier responses about the film would have been enough to let you know that Morgan Spurlock is associated with plenty of projects including "Supersize Me", "30 Days" and that old MTV game show whose title I'm still waiting for someone to find out.

I beleive the MTV show you're thinking of is "I Bet You Will". It was an Internet webcast, and later a show on MTV that paid people to do outrageous things for money.
