Episode 24 - It's a Wrap

The 2007-08 television season is as good as done. Sure a couple stragglers (Lost) still have episodes left to air but this one is basically a wrap.

I probably don't have much in the way of praises for a television season that brought us a musical that barely lasted two episodes ("Viva Laughlin"), a show reminiscent of our very own state of Minnesota bragging about our previous governor being able to pummel neighboring governors (NBC's "My Dad is Better Than Your Dad") and who could forget the host of terrible sitcoms that someone found funny enough to air ("The Return of Jezebel James", "Cavemen") but attracted approximately the same number of fans as readers this blog has.

And then there's the anonomaly that goes by the name "According to Jim". How that show and its stale cookie cutter approach to comedy survives is a mystery to me.

However, I'm not entirely doom and gloom when it comes to the TV season that was. I saw a few moments of genius that are worthy of praise. The first one that comes to mind is the unfortunately short lived "Miss Guided" on ABC which ran for a mere 7 episodes and existed as the lead-in for "Lost" for three weeks. It was a great concept for a sitcom because it was well-written and well-acted. Those two traits, however, were overshadowed by the excellent comedic acting of Judy Greer and Chris Parnell who played a pitifully sad and lonely high school counselor and an inept and self-absorbed assistant principal respectively.

It felt fresh because it followed the current trend of sitcoms meaning that it featured no obnoxious laugh track. That trend exists because the powers that be know the writing and acting is funny enough that viewers will laugh without being told when to laugh. They hope that viewers of these shows are intuitive enough to know humor when they see it. The only bad thing I will say about "Miss Guided" is that it isn't on the schedule for the next television season. Maybe that's a good thing because it would be a shame to see a show with so much promise be re-tooled to appeal to more viewers.

Are you weeping after I told you that "Cavemen" is no more? What should have stayed? What needs to go away?
