Sauerkraut. Just that one word sends noses wrinkling and the strongest iron guts wrenching in pure agony. Of course, some choose to celebrate it and fortunately for us, the city of Henderson, Minnesota celebrates the vile cabbage product each year over the last weekend of June. I make it a point to witness the hilarious and disgusting sauerkraut eating contest each year and remembered my camera this time.
The winner devoured his two pound serving of sauerkraut in an admirable and record-breaking time of one minute flat. I can only assume he isn't feeling too well today.

So funny! I love sauerkraut. I think it was a possible deal breaker in my marriage -- love me, love my family's secret supply of sauerkraut. Seriously, the stuff I get from my in-laws is so good. They don't make it. They're gifted with the precious stuff and then they share a small supply of their kraut with us. However, you will never see me eat two pounds of kraut. Ice cream or chocolate? Yes. Fermented cabbage? No.

I love sauerkraut too. I've been craving a good German dinner with sausage, mashed potatoes and sauerkraut, but I may need to wait to have sauerkraut until these images have been cleansed from my memory.

My Polish grandmother always made the best sauerkraut (kapusta) ever! She put split peas and fennel seed in it, among other things. She also used sauerkraut as the filling in her many varieties of pierogi that she made.
Sauerkraut and mustard on a grilled bratwurst is a palate pleaser, as well.
Plus, sauerkraut is lo-cal -- one cup has just 27 calories and 2 grams of fat!

I think my sauerkraut connection uses fennel seeds. Does anyone know of a restaurant that serves really good sauerkraut? I'm thinking the Black Woods German place in Minneapolis might be a good source.
