Have you ever heard of giving yourself a theme song? I remember seeing an episode of Ally McBeal where her therapist suggests that she give herself a theme song. She was to play that song in her head when she felt down or her self-confidence dipped (I think Ally's was "Tell Him" by The Exciters). Your theme song should be a song that gives you a lift as you walk down the street, a song that makes you feel happy, confident and in control. This all got me to thinking: If I had a theme song, what would it be? I think my theme song is (drum roll please) … "In a Big Country" by Big Country. I love how it starts with that guy yelling ‘SHOCK!’ and it’s such a happy song that just feels like it’s driving you forward toward greatness. It gives me the feeling that I can do anything and that happiness is there for the taking.
What’s your theme song?
What song would put a spring in your step and hope in your heart?
Small Town - by John (Cougar, yes recorded when he was Cougar) Mellencamp. Why? First, and most obvious, because my maiden name was Small. I was born in a small town, I live in a small town, my life's work is in a small town and so are my passions. I will die in a small town too. Well, that last part is a bit depressing, but ...
In college, every time my anthem was played my friends and Pub mug buddies would sing my entire name when the words "small town" were sung - as in "I was born in LISA SMALL TOWN."
1979 by Smashing Pumpkins. It's a fantastic song with a very innovative (for its time) video that just added to the overall feeling of the song. It has a bit of meaning because I was born in 1979, it was played alot during my formidable high school years and it still has a place, musically, in my world today.

"You Only Live Once" by The Strokes. The lyrics are a bit abstract, but all kind of relate to the title in some way -- basically saying there are all kinds of things in this world that can leave you disillusioned, but you can choose to walk right past them and maintain your own good vibe, sort of espousing a live-and-let-live attitude. And the music is amazing -- the saucy beat and good-time attack of the band really lift you up. I don't know if there's such a thing as a skip-strut, but that's what the song makes me want to do. Check out the whimsical video.

"I Feel It All" by Feist is a great theme song for me. It's extremely upbeat and makes me want to dance with my arms in the air. Plus the lyrics "I feel it all, I feel it all, my wings are wide, my wings are wide, wild card inside, wild card inside" make me think I should just live life in the moment and feel free to just be, to let go of all worries and insecurities. Here's the Feist video link, I think it shows the spirit of the song.

Kick Out The Jams - MC5. Or
Kick Out The Jams - MC5. Or better yet, the Bad Brains/Rollins cover of the tune.
The first line says it all for me, "KICK OUT THE JAMS M*%#@!*&%#*RS!"
"I'M GONNA KICK 'EM OUT!!!"
"I'M GONNA KICK 'EM OUT!!!" Indeed. If you own a guitar, this song is almost a battle cry.
